Shen Diagnosis and Treatment

The ability to recognize and evaluate Shen is one of the most important diagnostic tools in Chinese Medicine. Shen is best described as the light that shows from behind the eyes and from beneath the skin that gives clues about a patients psychological and physical health as well as the nature of the individual spirit. Shen resides in the heart and also in the brain as a higher level of fire energy. According to the Nei Jing, Shen can be felt as well as seen and is necessary in the transmission of emotions between two people. This interactive two day workshop will teach participants to recognize the various qualities of Shen and learn to interpret the meanings. Students will learn to read Shen visually from the eyes and somatically as an instinctive action and felt sense. Special attention will also be paid to Shen disturbances of the emotions and brain function, including mental illness. In addition, participants will be involved in learning to recognize lying and truth telling as well as interpret the various emotions as expressed through the Shen of the eyes and the qualities of a special variation of Shen called Peach Luck, often described as magnetism. Shen is invaluable in clinical practice and will help practitioners access an aspect of health that will deepen their understanding of the psychological and emotional processes of their patients.
